FENCING TEAM MAY KEEP INTERCOLLEGIATE TITLE

HOLD MATCH IN HOTEL ASTOR TOMORROW AND FRIDAY

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Four members of the University fencing squad which leaves to-night for New York, will represent the University in the intercollegiates in the Hotel Astor tomorrow and Friday. Captain E. H. Lane '24, E. L. Lane '24, and Roland Fleer '24, have qualified as a foils team in the northern half of the league and the two Lane brothers have earned a place in the individual foils championship contests. F. W. Saunders '24 has also qualified for the individual epee contests.

The two Lane brother and Fleer will be given a hard struggle to keep the titular honors they won last year. Yale and the Army, the other two qualifying teams in the northern half, and Columbia from the southern half, have been defeated by the University foilsmen. Pennsylvania and the Navy are the other two qualifying teams and either one may prove to be a dark horse.

Captain Lane Undefeated This Year

Captain E. H. Lane '24, has yet to be defeated this year by a college fencer but he is sure to find some strong competition on Friday night when the finals will be held. Bloomer of Columbia, Grandfield of the Navy, Huntington of Yale and Stebbins of the Army, each captain of his team, are among the ten men who have qualified and each will be a dangerous opponent for the Lane brothers.

F. W. Saunders '24 will find only seven men with whom to compete for the epee championship but Brown of Yale to whom he lost in the dual meet last week, and Captain Thompson of Pennsylvania are the favorites for the title.

On Thursday morning, the University will be represented in the Clemens Medal Novice Foil Competition for fencers with less than two years of experience. Noll Morese '26 and A. R. Alen '26 of the Unive1rsity squad, with John Winder '27, number two man on the Freshman team, will compete for this title and Franklin Hollis, captain of the 1927 team, is a possible entrant.
