RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS OPEN TO HARVARD MEN

In December this year and again in December, 1925, a Massachusetts Student will be selected to hold a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford. England, according to an announcement made by Professor W. C. Greene '11 of Harvard University, who is secretary of the committee of selection for Massachusetts. The scholarships are tenable for three years, and until further notice the annual stipend, normally 300 pounds, will be 350 a Rhodes Scholar's choice of studies at Oxford.

There is a committee of selection for each state, but a candidate must first be designated by his own college or university. The method of such choice is left to the individual institution, but the basis of consideration is generally that of the state committee, namely: literary and scholastic ability and attainments; qualities of manhood, force of character, and leadership; and physical vigor, as shown by interest in outdoor sports or in other ways. There is no written examination, nor is a knowledge of Greek required.

Harvard May Have 5 Candidates

The number of candidates who may represent an institution in the competition within any one state depends upon the number of its students. On this basis Harvard may have five candidates for each appointment in the Massachusetts competition. Applications at Harvard should be made to the President, and are usually required before October 1 in any year.

Candidates may apply either for the state in which they make their home or for any state in which they have received at last two years of their college education before applying. For this reason Harvard College students of two or more years' residence, whose home is in another state, may compete either in Massachusetts or in their home state.

Men Must be Between 19 and 25

To be eligible this year a candidates must be an unmarried male citizen of the United States between the ages of 19 and 25, who by October 1, 1925, shall have completed at least his sophomore year at some recognized degree-granting university of college of the United States.
