Dr. Eliot's address to the Zionists on yesterday will doubtless receive great publicity. Since he has always supported the "Back to Palestine" movement, it was logical he should have been called upon to address the Zionists. But his was not the conventional speech of encouragement.
It is well that Dr. Eliot has spoken frankly. Those prominent Jews who are behind the movement to repatriate their race can not be ignorant of the conditions Dr. Eliot has set forth. If the movement is to gain any-healthy hold upon sufficient number of Jews to make it a success, it will be through a general recognition of distinct advantages to be gained by a return to Palestine.
So long as Jews are content to remain mere money changers or mere traders in goods which others produce, Zionists leaders can hope for no great success. It is only when discontent shall replace apathy that the Jews shall turn from New York's East Side to Palestine where they can get back to the soil and rejuvenate their ancient virtues.
