ELIOT WARNS JEWS NOT TO INTERMARRY

Thinks Jews Should Have Palestine--Place to Recover Lost Physical Strength by Muscular Pursuits

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

"The growing tendency of the Jewish race to inter-marry with Christians is unfortunate," declared President Eliot in his address to the Harvard-Zionist Society yesterday in Phillips Brooks House.

"I have noticed," he continued, "that no marriage can be undertaken between people of non-kindred races with safety I have had a long observation of such intermarriages, and I have never known them to turn out well. I hope that you Jews will consider that.

Jews Are Prepotent Says Biologists

In describing the effects of such mixed marriages, Dr. Eliot quoted the statements of biologists to the effect that the Jews are "prepotent" in intermarriages. "Thus," he said, "after two or three generations, the children of such marriages will look like Jews only."

Dr. Eliot went on to say that, in his opinion, the Jewish race has not been assimilated in this country. He declared that in spite of the conception that America was a "melting pot" for foreign peoples, there has been little assimilation of races in the United States, and that, in addition, he does not think that there should be.

Each Race Has Its Own Gifts

"What we want in this country," he said, "is a number of races, with various gifts, each contributing its own peculiar qualities to the common welfare."

President Eliot endorsed the Zionist movement and stated that he believed the Jews should have in Palestine at least one place where they can "put their backs against the wall and face all comers, if comers there be; a place where they can recover some of the qualities which they have lost during their long years of suffering in many lands. It will give them an opportunity to practice the muscular trades, such as agriculture and carpentry, from which the Jews have been excluded for centuries. What the Jews need is more healthy, strong, and stabilizing occupations."
