COMMUNISM FATAL TO ENGLISH LABORITES

England Far Back on Road to Two Party System but Labor Must Purge Itself Before Regaining Power

"England is getting back to the two party system", said Professor Wilbur Cortex Abbott, Professor of History in the University, in commenting on the decisive defeat of the Labor party at the polls which was announced yesterday. "The English are beginning to realize that a system of party government based on class distinctions cannot be really representative of public opinion."

When asked if the repudiation of the Labor government indicated a general decline in the political power of Labor, he replied that it did not. "The reason that the Conservative vote increased so greatly is that the English people in general are disguised with the attitude of the Laborite leaders toward Russia and Communism. All English men are voting as citizens instead of partisans now."

Professor Abbott declared that there were many laborers who adhered to Conservative or Liberal principles and that the English parties are coming more and more to represent honest differences of opinion. He predict a future modification of the Labor party into something less radical as it certainly could not go on as a class organization. "This modified party and the Conservative party will probably be the two great parties of the future", he said, "There will be no Liberal-Labor combines or Liberal-Conservative coalitions, but the opponent of the Conservative party will probably have many of the characteristics of a Liberal Labor combine.

"Mr. Asquith's failure to secure re-election is just a minor incident of the campaign, one which is likely to occur at any election. Mr. Stanley Baldwin will probably be the next Prime Minister.

"The Labor party's attitude toward the communists has caused great dissatisfaction among the people, and the new government will refuse to carry out the negotations with Russia which the Laborites started. There will be no loan of any sort to Russia."

When asked if the Labor party would ever regain power, he declared that it probably would not come back as such, but that it might return at some future time when it had been modified as he predicted. "This election makes it the official Opposition party." he said in closing, "but if does not seem probable that the English people who have been so greatly disturbed by two elections in quick succession, will want another for a considerable time so that the Conservative party seems likely, barring accidents to have a comparatively long lease of power"
