BEQUEATHS LARGE SUM TO UNIVERSITY

Harvard Is Named Residuary Legatee--Understood That Sum Will Reach Hundreds of Thousands

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A large bequest will be received by the University as residuary legatee in the will of Mrs. Susan Greene Dexter, late of Boston, it was announced yesterday afternoon, when the will was filed in the Suffolk Probate office yesterday. Mr. Roland Gray '95 was appointed executor. No definite information has been released as to the probable amount of the bequest, but it was understood last night from reliable sources that the sum involved will in all likelihood reach the hundreds of thousands.

The income from the bequest will be devoted to supporting research work in bacteriology and to purchasing books for the library. Both of Mrs. Dexter's sons are graduates of the University; Gordon Dexter completing his course in 1887 and Samuel Dexter, now dead, graduating three years later.

"Children indebted to Harvard"

After several personal bequests amounting to about $100,000, the will contains this clause:

"As my son Samuel has died, and as my son Gordon, besides his own present property, will on my death come into property from which a large part of my income is derived, I have determined to give the residue of my property to public purposes, and I wish, in so doing, to devote it to an institution to which my children have been indebted; and I can think of none better than Harvard Col- lege, at which both my sons graduated, one in the class of 1887 and the other in the class of 1890. I therefore . . . do hereby give the residue of my estate . . . to the President and Fellows of Harvard College, the income of one molety to be applied for the purpose of research in bacteriology in the medical or other departments of the university, and the income of the other molety thereof to be applied to the purchase of books for the library of the university or its branches.
