EXPECT STIFF FIGHT FROM PURPLE ELEVEN

Holy Cross, has never caused to spectators at the Stadium to become as fearful of a Harvard defeat as Middlebury did last year, but neither has it often made them feel confident of victory until the whistle announced the end of the game. The Crimson teams that have faced the Worcester combinations have always been well on in their development and yet they have been held twice to a 3-0 score and last year to a single touchdown.

The game which will begin at 2.30 o'clock in the Stadium this afternoon promises to be another close battle. Harvard showed much improvement over its first appearance when it defeated Middlebury last week, but it must show a good deal more today if it wants the betting odds for the Dartmouth struggle, scheduled for a week hence.

Mahaney and Glennon Dangerous

Coach O'Donnell brings to Cambridge today some players that it will take more than mediocre work on the Crimson's part to hold down. Captain Mahaney is perhaps the best lineman the Crimson will have met in its early season games. This 196-pound end is likely to do much damage to the University formations. Glennon, the Purple's star halfback, is a dangerous man when he gets loose. Last year Coach Fisher warned his men to watch this Purple threat closely, and he was never allowed to break away for a long gain. Crimson enthusiasts hope that Captain Greenough's men will be able to ocver him as well this year.

Shift Crimson Backfield

The Harvard backfield has been radically changed since its last appearance. Gehrke's leg has been giving him trouble lately and he will not start today, although there is a good chance that he may see action before the afternoon is over. Zarakov's twisted leg will keep him out entirely, and it is very doubtful if Cheek will even dress. Miller, therefore, is the only veteran who started against Middlebury, who will begin today. Hammond, Howe, and Stafford should prove to be worthy substitutes for the injured men. The last-named, starting his first game at quarterback, has a fine chance to gain on his disabled rivals in the field for the signal-calling berth.
