The athletic career of the class of 1928 will begin today when its football team invades Andover. It is with gloomy prospects that the Freshman squad will leave Standish Hall early this afternoon. The bright outlook with which the Freshmen started practice three weeks ago was quickly dimmed as player after player joined the injured list.
Early, Callahan sustained an injury which will keep him out a good part of the season. This was a serious blow to the line, but until a few days ago Coach Campbell was counting on a strong backfield combination. Then it was learned that Pollard, star Middlebury athlete, and Walling, who came from the North Shore Country Day School of Chicago with an excellent reputation, would both be out of scrimmage for two or three weeks on account of leg injuries. These two players were destined to be halfbacks in the line-up against Andover today. Their loss is a decided blow.
Four Good Backs Remain
Four good backs, however, remain for the first line-up, although the substitutes are weak. Chauncey, a veteran Groton back, will do the punting. As halfbacks Coach Campbell will have Gallway from St. George's and Linscott of Woburn High and Exeter. Even though the last named has a broken nose Coach Campbell finds himself obliged to use him.
Whereas Andover has met two opponents already this season and vanquished them both, the Harvard Freshmen have had no test. Dean Academy fell before the powerful school team 23-0, and last week Cushing lost by one touchdown.
