1927 BASKET MEN FIGHT FOR REGULAR POSITIONS

The Freshman basketball squad worked out yesterday for the first time since the holidays. With the opening game only two days away, Coach Chase found it necessary to put the men through a vigorous practice session. They seemed none the worse for their week of inaction, however, and every man will be in condition for tomorrow's contest with the Boston Y. M. C. A. aggregation

The Freshman lineup is still uncertain, with at least two men making a strong bid for every position. The center position will undoubtedly be taken care of by Leekley, who has recently been shifted from the forward squad. He was one of the best of the forwards, but he should be even more valuable at center. He is over six feet in height, fairly fast, and a very good shot. DeRavignon is his most likely substitute. The leading forwards are Eaton, Eby, Phelps, Thomas, and Carden. Eaton and Eby are likely to start tomorrow, but Phelps is apt to force either to the sidelines. Phelps is the best foul-shooter on the squad, and his offensive game is excellent. Thomas has made rapid improvement.

Malick and Lightbourn are contesting with McCrum and Hesse for the guard positions. Malick is certain of a place in the starting lineup, and Lightbourn seems to be a bit ahead of his competitors for the other position.

The team on the basis of its showing in practice is about the equal of last year's championship five at the corresponding period of development. There are no men on the squad with substantial preparatory school records, but there are two or three whom Coach Chase expects will eventually become college stars. With no stellar performers around whom to build, the development of the team will inevitably be slow. Tomorrow's contest will offer a real-test, and Coach Chase thinks that his team has an even chance to win.
