The 1923 season of the upper-class 150-pound crews began yesterday afternoon when 49 candidates reported at Newell boat house. Coach William Haines, who will have charge of all the 150-pound crews this spring, spoke, outlining the plans for the season, and emphasizing the importance of training.
The men who reported were then divided into four crews, to be known as combinations 1, 2, and 3, and first Sophomore. The first two and the fourth have, been retained almost intact from last fall. These crews, which are not in any way graded, will start work on the machines today, and are as follows:
Combination 1.--Bow, Oliver La Farge '24; 2. S. B. Damon '24; 3, P. H. Robb '25; 4, H. P. Thomas '25; 5, H. K. Prince '24; 6, G. B. Guptill '25; 7, Elliott Perkins '23; stroke, S. G. French '25.
Combination 2.--Bow, P. W. Smith '25; 2, C. A. Weyerhauser '23; 3, J. E. Brookhouse '25; 4, Donald Maxwell '23; 5, Julius Wadsworth '25; 6, W. A. Spurr '25; 7, C. Van B. Cushman '25; stroke, Sherlock Davis '24.
Combination 3.--Bow, Alberto Terrazas Jr. '24; 2, H. P. Sharp '25; 3, J. B. Edmonds '23; 4, H. M. Watts '25; 5, R. B. Holman '25; 6, Donald McVickar '24; 7, J. O. Bangs '25; stroke, J. G. W. Thomas '24.
First Sophomore.--Bow, H. deF. Lockwood '25; 2, R. H. Ames '25; 3, G. M. Grinnell '25; 4, C. W. Felt 2E.S.; 5, F. J. Gindorff '25; 6, J. J. Hollister Jr. '25; stroke, A. L. Smith 3rd '25.
This afternoon at 5 o'clock at Newell boat house, candidates for the various class crews, exclusive of Freshmen, will report. Coach E. J. Brown '96, who will have charge of all upper-class crews, will speak. Work on the machines for these men will begin on next Monday.
