FIVE CREWS BEGIN WORK ON MACHINES

A. J. Conlon '22 Is Presented With Two Wendell Bats--Captain George Owen '23 Outlines Plans for This Spring

The seasons of two University major sport teams began yesterday, when candidates for the University crew and for the baseball team reported. About 50 candidates were present at each meeting.

The crew season began officially yesterday afternoon in Newell Boat House at 4 o'clock, when Coach F. J. Muller, who will be in charge of all the higher crews during the coming season, outlined the general plans for 1923. From the 50 men who reported, five crews were picked, and began work immediately on the machines. These crews are temporary choices only.

They were as follows:

Crew A.--Bow, B. F. Rice-Bassett '25; 2, H. S. Morgan '23; 3, G. R. Johnson '25; 4, N. C. Webb '23; 5, B. McK. Henry '24; 6, A. H. Ladd Jr. '23; 7, H. H. Fuller 3E. S.; stroke, S. N. Brown '24.

Crew B.--Bow, G. S. Mumford '25; 2, J. D. Jameson '24; 3, Francis Fiske '23; 4, T. L .Eliott '25; 5, C. J. Hubbard 3E.S.; 6, Parker Hamilton '24; 7, D. S. Holder '24; stroke, S. B. Kelley '25.

This afternoon at 4.30 o'clock, in Newell Boat House, the season of the upper-class 150-pound crews will begin with a meeting at which Coach William Haines will speak.

At the meeting of University baseball candidates last evening at the Varsity Club Dr. Channing Frothingham '02 presented the two Barrett Wendell Jr. trophy bats to A. J. Conlon '22, captain of the University nine last year. Captain George Owen Jr. '23 outlined the general plane for this spring, and Coach J. T. Slattery in a brief speech stressed particularly the need of pitchers. Dr. D. C. Parmenter '13 also spoke.

The battery candidates will hold their first practice this afternoon at 2.30 o'clock.
