BASKETBALL MEN HAVE FIRST HARD WORK-OUT

Wachter Puts Four Teams Through Long Scrimmage--All Members of Squad Take Part--Combs Is Injured

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Coach Wachter divided the basketball squad into four tentative teams yesterday and put all four through a strenuous scrimmage, the first of the season. Two practice games with regulation 20-minute halves were played, Team A defeating Team B by a 37 to 17 score and Team C triumphing over Team D, 20 to 8.

Team A had a distinct advantage over Team B in teamwork. Smith and Merriam, the two forwards, gave a fine early season exhibition of passing. The former was the high scorer of the afternoon with six goals from the floor. Combs, last year's Freshman guard, made his first appearance at center on Team A. His general floor game yesterday, was excellent until he twisted his ankle and was forced to retire. The injury, however was not serious enough to keep him on the sidelines more than a few days. The Team A guards were Black and Rudofsky, veterans of last year.

On Team B the defensive play of Bowine was noteworthy and Middleton had moments of brilliance at forward. Team C was a fairly effective combination with Maher and Reed its outstanding figures. Maher, like Combs a guard on the 1926 five, has been converted into a forward.

Almost every man on the squad was given a chance in the scrimmage in anticipation of the approaching cut. Captain Gordon and Samborski were kept out of action on account of minor injuries, but both will be in condition to play next week.
