TECH MAN WANDERS BUT LEADS HARRIERS HOME

A hundred yards or so out of his way during the latter part of Tech's cross country victory on Saturday meant little enough to Fricke, who had led from the start, for after returning from his excursion the speedy engineer passed nine men and regained his honor position with a total time of 27m. 31s. Four of his team-mates secured places among the first seven to finish, so that M. I. T. carried the day, 21 to 35.

In three cases extra steam during the last mile pushed the University runners up a notch, whereas in only one instance did the last minute brush result unfavorably for the Crimson. Cutcheon, who clocked in 27m. 46s., pulled himself up into second place by passing Rooney and finishing one second ahead of him. Bemis of M. I. T. followed half a dozen seconds later. Duffy had been running as steady a pace as any, but towards the end could not summon the additional stength to pevent Chapin stealing his fifth place by two seconds in 27m. 56s.

Watters Fades at Finish

In the homestretch contest for seventh, however, the brush at the finish proved unprofitable for the University. Watters had been up with the best of them during the opening chapters, but had found his first race of the season not so easy after the half-way mark. He had been having it nip and tuck with Captain Holt, but it was only over the final distance that the M. I. T. leader, uncovering a perfectly timed sprint, swept past with a second's lead to finish in 28m. 8s.

Harrison, too, had a close thing of it but with better results, for he nosed out Keplinger by the same margin in 28m. 23s. Ryan was the last runner to place, and was immediately followed by Captain Coburn.

The Freshman team performed 100 percent perfect as far as the score was concerned, for it carried away the first five places and with them the meet 15 to 54. Swede, the Crimson captain, led the pack at the finish by 45 seconds in 23m. 25s., while all four of his team-mates who placed arrived on the scene within a minute of his appearance at the last red flag.
