The teams lined up as follows: FIRST PERIOD The Harvard team appeared on the field with three foot numerals on backs. Captains Mallory and Hubbard wade to center of field for toss. Lee at quarter for Harvard. Mallory won the toss and chose the north goal. Eastman kicked off for Harvard Richeson on 10 yard ran back to 25 yard line. Neale punted to Harvard's 40 yard line. The ball was fumbled and recovered by Dillon. Yale's ball on 35 yard line. Lee fumbled the kick. Eckart was injured and replaced by Esselstyn. A forward pass from Neale to Bingham failed to be completed and Neale failed through the line. With third down and nine to go, a 20 yard run by Neale carried the ball around left end to 20 yard line. Pond fumbled but recovered, losing five yards. Neale Fumbles Twice Neale fumbled and lost five yards around right end, putting the ball on the 23 yard line. Yale then opened out its formation and a long forward pass. Neale to Pond, grounded. Harvard was then penalized 15 yards for rough play. With the ball on the 15 yard line. Neale fumbled and livans recovered on the 28 yard line. Hammond immediately punted to Yale's 32 yard line and the situation was saved. Neale immediately punted back to Harvard's 10 yard line. Harvard's ball on her 15 yard line. Cheek in line plunge gained one yard and then Hammond punted to 50 yard line. Pond gained three yards through the line, and then Neale kicked over the goal line. The ball was taken out to the 20 yard line and Hammond punted to Richeson, who recovered the ball on the 40 yard line and was tackled by Eastmon. Pond went through the line for one yard, and Neale kicked back to the 20 yard line. Cheek makes five yards on a line play and Hammond punts to Yale's 35 yard line. Harvard Shows New Play Neale kicked to 30 yard line and Lee fumbled but recovered. Lee carrying the ball went through line for 15 yds. This was evidently the first of Harvard's mystery plays. Hammond kicked to Yale's 12 yard line and Neale kicked to center of field. Cheek failed to gain around right end but Yale was penalized five yards for offside on the next play. Hammond took the ball around right end for four yards and Cheek made a yard through left tackle. With third down and five yards to go, Hammond kicked to Yale's 20 yard line. Yale's ball. Pond made two yards around right end. The quarter ended with the ball on Yale's 18 yard line. The ball was carried to the other end of the field to a fairly dry spot, while the two teams mopped the mud from their faces. With the exception of Lee's 15 yard run neither team had been able to display its new formations. On account of the rain and mud the game had degenerated into a punting duel. SECOND PERIOD. Luman Races to Touchdown On the first play Neale was tackled by Hill for no gain. Neale kicked to Yale's 33 yard line. On the first play Cheek fumbled and. Pond recovered, running 63 yards for a touchdown. Mallory kicked the goal. Score: Yale T. Harvard 9. Eastman kicked off to Richeson, who ran the ball back to the 25 yard line and was then downed by Combs. With the ball on her own 25 yard line Yale opened up. Neale fumbled, but the ball was recovered by Lovejoy. Cross Buck Play Falls Starting again on the 20 yard line Neale kicked to Harvard's 40 yard line. Lee went through left tackle for 6 yards and Hammond punted to Yale's 10 yard line. Pond almost broke loose through the center of the line, gaining five yards. Pond then hit the line for two yards, and Neale punted high to the 40 yard line. Lee caught the ball and was stopped in his tracks by. Doe, Cheek carrying the ball, tore for three yards through left tackle. On an attempted cross buck Hammond fumbled, and the ball was recovered by Yale on her own 37 yard line. Hammond promptly punted to Richeson on his own 25 yard line, and the latter was downed by Hubbard. Neale on an end play lost five yards, nailed behind the line by Coburn. McGlone was then sent in for Lee. Pond was able to gain only one yard on a right tackle play. Neale then punted to McGlone who was downed on the 26 yard line by Milstead. With the ball on his 20 yard line and with second down and 15 yards to gain, Neale punted to the 40 yard line. Cheek failed to gain on a line play and Harvard offside, was penalized five yards. Hammond punted and the ball rolled over the goal line. Neale Gets off Good Punt The ball was carried out to the 20 yard gain and Pond made five yards through right tackle. Time was taken out while both teams mopped the mud off their faces. Neale then kicked out of bounds on Harvard's 35 yard line. Hammond kicked to Yale's 12 yard line. On the first play Neale punted to the center of the field. Crosby was sent in to replace Combs. McGlone started a run around right end but was stopped for no gain. On an attempted punt Hammond fumbled, then picked up the ball and ran for eight yards around left end. Hammond's next punt was more successful and went over the goal line, the ball being brought out to Yale's 20 yard line. Neale punted to the center of the field. On the next play McGlone was stopped going through right tackle Hammond punted and the ball came to a standstill on Yale's one yard line. Spalding Replaces McGlone With firm footing Neale punted to Yale's 38 yard line. Spaulding was sent in for McGlone, and on the next play he passed to Hill, but the pass was grounded. The half ended. Score: Yale 7, Harvard 0. By now, the field, the players and the spectators had become thoroughly waterlogged. Both teams were able to do little but go through the motions of football. With a slippery ball and a slippery field there had been little opportunity for anything but heavy punts and splashing line plays. Between the halves the two rival bands seemed to have as much difficulty in executing their maneuvers as did the rival football teams. While both bands were forming their respective letters in the mud the trail of their formation was left behind in the field. Marooned in the center of the field a group of photographers made a forlorn effort to take motion pictures of the cheer leaders as they slip and slide up and down the side lines. Haughton Watches Game Among the most interested of the 50,000 spectators was P. D. Haughton '99, founder of the Harvard system, who took a vacation from his duties at Columbia, to watch the Harvard Yale struggle in the Stadium. With Hammond outkicking Neale and Harvard stopping Yale's much vaunted attack by a new system of defense most of the playing of the first half was in Yale territory. Coach Fisher and his assistants have developed a defense, playing seven men on the line of scrimmage; which Yale had not yet been able to solve. But Yale had been more alert and had recovered all its own fumbles and one of Harvard's which led directly to Yale's score. At the very moment when Harvard seemed to have at last placed itself in position to score, Yale snatched its opportunity and scored its first touchdown in the Stadium since 1909. THIRD PERIOD The teams started the second half with Deaver in for Luman and Hart for Bingham. The Harvard team returned to the field with dry jerseys without numbers, and with Combs at left end, and Lee at quarter. Mallory kicked off to Cheek, who ran back to the 30 yard line. Hammond punted to Yale's 25 yard line. Neale kicked to Harvard's 43 yard line. Hammond's punt was blocked by Blair and it was Yale's ball on Harvard's 15 yard line. Richeson went through the line for no gain. Yale, offside, was penalized five yards. With one down and 15 yards to go Pond was nailed by four Harvard players for no gain. Yale Scores on Placement Stevens was thrown for a three yard loss by Combs. With 17 yards to go on third down Pond was tackled by Evans on the 18 yard line. Yale prepared for a placement kick, Richeson holding the ball for Mallory, who sent the ball squarely between the goal posts. Score: Yale 10, Harvard 0. Eastman kicked off to Mallory, who ran back to his own 30 yard line, where he was tackled by Combs. Stevens then kicked to Harvard's 25 yard line. Time out, Pond hurt. Cottle was sent in to take his place and miller went in for Blair. Second Place Kick Falls Harvard, with the ball on the 25 yard line, kicked to Yale's 38 yard line. Stevens immediately punted back to Harvard's five yard line, Hart touching it down. Hammond's next punt went only to his won 28 yard line. Stevens was tackled by Dunker for a one yard loss. On a buck through center, Cottle was again driven through center. On the fourth down Mallory attempted a place kick, which failed and Cheek caught the ball on Harvards 15 yard line. McGlore Replaces Lee McGlone went in at quarter, replacing Lee. Cheek gained two yards through the line, and then Hammond through the line, and then Hammond kicked to Yale's 38 yard line. Stevens immediately punted high to Harvard's 50 yard line and Cheek was tackled by Hart after a 10 yard run. McGlone was tackled for a loss around right end. Hammond thereupon punted high, and the ball rolled outside on Yale's 45 yard line. Crosby was then sent in for Combs, Stevens punted, and the ball barely rolled over Harvard's goal line. It was taken out to the 20 yard line. Quarter Ends on Five Yard Line On the next play McGlone fumbled, and Hart recovered for Yale on Harvard 28 yard line. Cottle failed to gain around left end, and on the next play Stevens swam through the center of the line for two yards. Mallory then sent another placement kick squarely between the goal posts. Score Yale 13, Harvard 0. Eastman kicked off to Milstead. It was a short kick and he was not stopped until he reached his own 45 yard line. On the third play the same man was downed on the line of scrimmage. Stevens punted over the goal line, and the ball was brought out to the 20 yard line. Hammond got off a long punt to Yale's 35 yard line. Cheek Gains on Delayed Pass Stevens sent a low punt back to Harvard's 30 yard line. On the next play Cheek, on a delayed pass, made nine yards, but with two yards to go he failed on the next rush to gain through the center. Hammond then kicked to Yale's 15 yard line. Kernan was sent in for Greenough, and Bingham returned in place of Hart. Stevens kicked to a puddle in midfield. Kernan's pass to Hammond went over his head Hammond reached for it, and ran it back to the line of scrimmage. On the next play Hammond kicked to Richeson on Yale's five yard line. Spalding Replaces McGlone Stevens kicked to the center of the field, where Hammond fumbled, and the ball was recovered by Bingham. Spaulding was sent in to replace McGlone. Lockwood then replaced Cheek. Hammond kicked to Yale's 23 yard line. Hobson took Evans place in the line. A drive by Cottle netted six yards. Gordon was sent in in place of Hill at right end. Cottle gained two more yards on a line smash. With fourth down and two yards to go, Stevens punted; Spaulding fumbled but the ball was recovered by Harvard on the 25 yard line. Hammond then gained three yards through the line. A pass from Spaulding to Gordon was broken up on the next play. Hammond then punted to Yale's 35 yard line. Russell Hubbard and Donovan went in for Eastman and Grew. Harvard was penalized five yards on an offside play. With first down on Yale's 40 yard line. Richeson gained four yards. Pfaffmann was then sent in for Hammond. A fumble by Yale on the next play recovered was recovered by Yale. Hass replaced Cottle, and fumbled on his first play. Yale recovered. Neidlinged was sent in for Hass. Stevens punted to Spaulding on the 20 yard line. O'Hearn limped in replacing Neidlinger. Jenkins replaced Pfaffmann and gained five yards. Forward pass failed
