UNION TOURNAMENT SHOWS LITTLE BRILLIANT TENNIS

Seeded Players Encounter No Real Opposition

The first and second rounds of the Union tennis tournament got well under way yesterday afternoon on the Jarvis Courts when 27 of the matches were played. None of the matches uncovered excellent tennis since the seeded players encountered little opposition.

This afternoon the tournament will probably close the first round, much of the second, and get well into the third round.

Results of the matches played yesterday in the first round of the Union tournament on the Jarvis Courts follow: Tarplin defeated Manning, 6-0, 6-1; Woodward defeated Russell, 6-0, 6-0; Sears defeated Noyes, 6-1, 2-1 (default); Merian defeated Raines, 6-4, 9-7; Pratt defeated Collier, 6-2, 6-3; Wakefield defeated Manning Carthy, 6-4, 6-0; Bandler defeated Lee, 6-3, 6-1; Huntington won by default from Montemayer; Richtemeyer defeated Wyman, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4; Upjohn defeated Hamlen, 6-2, 6-3; Carpenter defeated Hazard, 6-2, 8-6; Scully defeated Williams, 6-1, 6-0; Fetter won from Walr by default; Boone defeated McGill, 6-3, 6-3; Roots defeated Rickford, 6-4, 6-1; Guild defeated Strauss, 6-1, 6-1; Craig defeated Morris, 7-5, 6-4; Shapiro defeated Forester, 6-3, 6-0; Solomon defeated Geuld 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.

The results of the matches played in the second round follow: Debevoise won from Richtmeyer by default; Boone defeated Fetter, 6-4, 6-3; Martin defeated Gerstein, 6-0, 6-1; Sherman defeated Corn, 6-1, 6-1; Stone defeated C. Davis, 7-5, 6-8, 6-4: Harrington won from Chamberlain by default; Gallary won from Jenney by default; Stralem defeated Willard, 6-0, 6-1.
