The Crimson backfield received an accession of strength yesterday when it became known that J. W. Hammond '25 had been taken off probation after having passed the French reading requirements. His notice from the college office, was undoubtedly the most important white card to be sent out, other receivers notwithstanding. The coaches had counted heavily on the versatile Junior and had he failed to get out of his academic difficulties would have been hard put to find anyone satisfactorily to fill his place. He distinguished himself last year by his fine punting and ground gaining ability.
Hammond executed a 25 yard run in the practice on the Stadium field yesterday afternoon, when Coach Fisher put teams A, B, and C through the stiffest scrimmaging held so far this year. The seconds came into the stadium at about 3 o'clock, and until after 5 the ball was in motion. Team A would go in and carry the ball for a while, then B, then C, and finally A would start in again. Since there were no linesmen and since downs were not counted, there was no score for the day's work, but the first string players showed much improvement over their appearance Tuesday. The various backfield combinations went through their foes more smoothly and apperared to be working exceptionally well with the line.
Team A lined up as follows: l. e., Hill; l. t., Dunker; l. g., Hubbard; c., Greenough; r. g., Grew; r. t., Hobson; r. e., Evans; q., Lee and A'kers; halves, Howe and Cheek; f. b., Jenkins. Coburn and Samborski substituted for Howe and Jenkins.
Team A Scores Touchdown
At 4.30 o'clock a regular scrimmage started with team A facing the scrubs. After an exchange of kicks and ground gaining on the part of Coach Fisher's men, they finally secured the ball on the scrubs 35 yard line. Hammond, who had entered the game, raced around right end for a 25 yard gain, and after the ball had been carried within five yards of the second's goal, Coburn rushed the ball across in a single plunge. Lee failed to kick the goal.
Then team B went in, lined up as follows: l. e., gordon; l. t., Theopold; l.g., C. Bradford; c., Kernan; r. g., Daniell; r. t., Hubbard; r. e., Crosby; q., Akers; halves, Pfaffmann and Maher; f. h., Robb. Team B did little actual scrimmaging with the scrubs, working on the defense for the most part.
Lee, Pfaffmann, and Akers each had about six tries to make field goals from the 25 yard line. Akers was most successful missing only once. None of the kicks were blocked.
