680 FRESHMEN ENROLLED IN SPRING ATHLETICS

51 Percent of Class Registered in Organized Sports--Tennis and Rowing Prove Most Popular Activities, With Track Close Third

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Department of Physical Culture announced yesterday that 680 Freshmen have enrolled this spring for some athletic activity, and of these 352, or approximately 51 percent of the whole, have signed up for organized sports. This shows a decrease for last year, for although there are a few more in number than last year, the class is much larger, that the percent is decidedly smaller than the 58 percent who were enrolled a year ago. This is due to the fact that a great many more men have signed up for tennis than has ever been the case before, to the fact that there was no squash last year.

Tennis, with an increase of 91, has shown the greatest gain over last year's figures. A particularly interesting development is the decrease of the number in special corrective work from 55 to only three.

Tennis Most Popular Sport

In popularity, tennis and rowing are far ahead of the others, with 180 and 186, respectively. Track comes next, with an enrolment of 96, and after it, swimming, with 56.

Equitation, given by the University in conjunction with the Department of Military Science, has an enrolment of 38 men. A number of these, as well as many other students of military science, are engaged, in addition to their regular exercise, in pistol shooting on the range at Waverly.

The following table shows the number of Freshmen engaged in each sport as compared with the figures of last spring.   1925  1924 Tennis  189  98 Rowing  186  166 Track  96  87 Swimming  56  34 Baseball  53  49 Equitation  33  19 Handball  25  31 Squash  20  0 Lacrosse  17  16 Special Corrective Work  3  55 Fencing  2  0 Soccer  0  3
