BARSS WINS DUELLING SWORDS CHAMPIONSHIP

Foils Tournament to be Held at 2 o'Clock This Afternoon--Sabre Contest to be Continued Today--Fencing Team to Enter N. E. Championships

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

J. S. Barss '22 won the duelling swords tournament in the first day of the University fencing championship yesterday afternoon, while the sabre contest remained unfinished.

Barss' victory was by no means a surprise as his work throughout the season ending in the Intercollegiate Fencing Meet in New York last week when he tied for second place, had marked him as an almost certain winner. He won all of his seven matches, while J. K. Watson '23, runner-up in the tournament, was defeated only by Barss.

Ten men were entered in the round-robin sabre tournament, and the matches took so long that it was necessary to postpone nearly one half of them until today. This is the first time that sabres have been used to any great extent in the University, and it is mostly in an attempt to discover the feasibility of having a sabre team next year that this tournament has been incorporated in the championship contests.

Folls Tournament Today

As is always the case, the foils tournament this afternoon will arouse more interest than either of the two other divisions. In order to insure the finish of the matches, it will start promptly, at 2 o'clock with the remainder of the sabre matches beginning immediately afterwards. The interest will center especially around five men, Burke Boyce '22, captain of this year's team. W. R. Brewster '22, a veteran of three years experience on the University team, E. H. Lane '24, captain-elect for next year, E. L. Lane '24, and S. H. Ordway 1L., last year's captain and University champion, whose work has stamped them as close competitors for premier honors. Boyce should be the favorite, but any one of the five is apt to snatch the championship away. The foils tournament is open to all members of the University, but men intending to compete are asked to leave their names at the fencing room of Hemenway Gymnasium before noon today. The matches which will take place in the fencing room may be attended by members of the University and the general public.

The New England fencing championships will be held at the Boston Athletic Association next week. The first competition will be with duelling-swords on Wednesday evening with the sabres and foils coming on Friday afternoon and evening respectively. Ordway who secured third place in the sabre tournament last year, was the only University entry to place, but the chances are considerably brighter this season with a stronger and better-balanced team entered in each event. Here, too, competition promises to be strong with the best amateur fencers in New England entered, including representatives from the Dartmouth and Yale teams.
