Knocking two pitchers out of the box and scoring six runs on the third twirler the University baseball team swept the Northeastern nine to a 16-1 defeat on Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon. The 20 hits which the visiting pitchers allowed were mainly responsible for the score, but the base-runners also profited greatly from seven errors by the Northeastern fielders. The Crimson mound work, however, was not on a par with the hitting and in the second inning it looked as if the visitors would furnish a serious threat.
A hit by McCrey started the only rally of the Northeasterners and an error on second base brought the runner to second at the same time putting another man on base. Two hits brought McCrey home for the only tally in the visitors column. The Crimson nine answered this outburst with a three-bagger by Janin and it was only a moment later that he crossed the plate on Hallock's single. Russell pounded out another one placing Hallock in a position to score on a sacrifice fly by Conlon, and he himself crossed the plate when Gordon singled.
Setting the pace with this rally the University batters did not give the opposing pitchers a moment's rest. A walk, an error, and five hits gave the Crimson three more runs the next inning, and in the fourth Owen kept up the scoring by driving out a long three-base hit into deep center-field. A run in the fifth and two in the sixth paved the way for the long rally in the next inning when Owen again drove out a hit with two men on. Three more hits, a walk, and a fielder's choice added the last counts to the final five-run rally, as the game was called in the eighth. *Batted for Murphy in sixth inning.
