FINAL RALLY WINS FOR CRIMSON, 33-30

Breaking a 30-30 tie with but three minutes more to play, Coach Wachter's basket-men staged a last minute spurt Saturday night and in a whirlwind finish downed the Yale five 33-30 at the Hemenway Gymnasium, thus triumphing over the Blue quintet for the second time this year and bringing to a victorious close the second season of organized basketball at the University, a season which numbers in all 17 triumphs out of 22 games played.

Close all the way, the score see-sawed back and forth during the entire game, the lead changing ten times in all in the course of the tussle.

McLeish Shoots Accurately

It was the accurate foul shooting of Captain McLeish which in large part brought home the University victory, for the Crimson leader besides caging two baskets from the floor scored 13 free tries out of only 15 possible chances. At left forward Lowenthal again proved the soul of the Harvard offensive, caging five baskets; Fitts at center made two, while Gordon, sent in at the last second in spite of his recent illness, found the ring for the decisive shot which at the last moment broke the tie. In the defensive positions, Black and Rudofsky played their usual stellar game and forced the Blue to put almost its entire reliance in long shots from mid-floor.

The Crimson was the first to score after the opening whistle when Captain McLeish tallied on two free tries, but Yale seized the lead immediately after as Cooper ringed a foul and then scored from the floor. McLeish evened it up with another foul and the University again jumped into the lead when Lowenthal tallied his first basket after a pretty pass from Fitts. The Eli five came back, however, and the lead continued to shift back and forth for several moments. Finally the Crimson players managed to hold an advantage and although hard pressed by a last minute rally went off the floor at half time with the score 18-15 in their favor.

Comeback in Final Period

The second half was a succession of spurts which carried the ball first to one end of the floor and then to the other. Coming on the floor the Yale five scored six points in as many minutes and at once from 15-18 the score jumped to 21-18. McLeish made it 20 all with a free try and a basket; then Fitts put the Crimson again two points ahead. Yale came back with two foul shots but again the Crimson jumped ahead and it looked as if the game was won; Yale rallied, however, and with three minutes to go closed the count 30-30, only to fall behind for the third time when Gordon slipped in a basket and Captain McLeish clinched it with a last free try.
