FOOTBALL PLAYERS JOIN SQUAD AS TEAM STARTS WORK FOR FIRST GAME

The University hockey squad is rapidly rounding into form after its preliminary workouts. Practice yesterday consisted mainly of an informal scrimmage with the B. A. A. team, with frequent substitutions allowing the greater part of the squad a chance to play.

The team showed promise of considerable power, especially in the work of the forward line which is beginning to display and effective unity of attack which was a continual threat to the B. A. A. goal. Both teams scored frequently with the advantage of power slightly to favor of the more experienced Boston players. In the absence of Coach Claflin, Mr. Alfred Winsor '02 took charge of practice assisted by Mr. G. W. Canterbury '01.

The squad has been considerably strengthened by the addition of four men who have been resting up after the football season. W. E. Crosby '24, a regular defense man last year, and J. J. Lee '24, a substitute wing, reported on Wednesday; and Captain Owen and J. W. Hammond '25 reported yesterday. The only veteran who is not yet out is G. G. Walker '24, who is detained on account of illness.

No definite first combination has yet been formed. The greatest problem facing Coach Claflin is that of a goal guard with J. G. Flint '23, Chandler Bigelow '24 and Malcolm Dole '24 as the three most likely candidates.

The team that started yesterday's scrimmage was as follows: Forward line--Joseph Larocque '23, E. M. Beals '25, F. S. Hill '24; defense--P. W. Chase '25, George Owen Jr. '23; goal--J. G. Flint '23. In the first two minutes of play G. C. Guild '23 was substituted for Beals and Chandler Bigleow '25 for Flint.

Crosby, who did not report yesterday, will probably take Chase's place as first string defense, and Walker will presumably replace Beals in the forward line in the team that will start against Boston University next Wednesday. This combination should be an exceedingly effective one for the Crimson with every position except goal guard filled by last year's letter men, and with Beals making a strong bid for a place in the forward line and Hammond and Chase as capable substitutes for the defense.
