In an unusually hard-fought game, the University Soccer team was defeated Saturday 3-2 by the heavier Cornell team, in the first league game of the season.
Lamont and Byington, both handicapped by injuries received before and during the game, were not up to their usual form. The former was able to continue through the game but Byington had to give way to Pringle after a severe blow in the face. Dorman at the middle of the second half, sprained a ligament, and Greenidge, the University's clever fullback, fell on his wrist when attempting to intercept the ball, breaking both bones.
Captain Heizer began the scoring for the University after ten minutes of play, with a kick from scrimmage. Mayer, high point man for the Ithacans, followed him with a score from the center of the field, while Heizer made the only other goal for the Crimson on a pass from Byington. Mayer again retaliated by a score on a pass from Righter.
Raggged for First 10 Minutes
In the second half the University's play was ragged for the first 10 minutes and repeated shots went wild. Then the team showed a renewal of its team play but failed to net the one necessary goal. Mayer finally dashed the Crimson's hopes when he scored for the third time after 20 minutes of the half had passed. With 25 minutes still left to play the University continued to keep the ball in Cornell territory, but failed to score.
The summary: Time of halves, 45 minutes. Referee and timekeeper, R. Ritchie, Boston Referees Association. Goals, Heizer 2, Mayer 3.
