A new record in membership was established this year according to the semi-annual report of the Cooperative Society which was laid before the board of directors recently, covering the period from July 1, 1921, to December 31, 1921. Last year a greater figure than ever before was reached when on December 31, 1920, 7026 members had joined the organization, 3955 of whom were alumni officers or students of the University and 3071 were officers or students at Technology. This year's report brings the total to 7546 for both branches.

Total sales during this period amounted to $450,317.15, of which $335,985.04 represents business done at the Main Store, and $114,332.11 the sales at the Technology Branch, the total net profits for the six months, at both stores, amounting to $52,625.53. There is every reason to expect, according to the Board of Directors, that the Cooperative Society will be able to show at the end of the college year, a sufficient amount of net profit to pay the present rate of dividends with a substantial margin to spare.

The balance sheet for the half year shows a great improvement in finances. Cash on hand, on December 31, 1921, amounted to $48,328.68 as against $11,982.02 on December 31, 1920, while stock on hand, which stood at $179,816.59 on December 31, 1920, had been liquidated to $143,606.16 on December 31, 1921.

Plans for a new building in Harvard square were discussed by the directors but it was decided not to go ahead with these plans until the cost of building materials becomes stabilized. It is estimated that, at present prices, the new building would involve an expenditure of $150,000 or more.

As Professor W. B. Munro '99, the President of the Society, is to be absent from the University on sabbatical leave during the second half year, the vice president Mr. H. S. Thompson '99, was elected president to serve until the next annual meeting. Mr. Thompson is business manager of the Medical School. Professor A. W. Scott '09 of the Law School was elected vice president.
