The special 440-yard race at the track meet in the Stadium last Saturday, which was a trial race to determine who should run for the Harvard-Yale team in the meet with Oxford and Cambridge on July 23, was won by G. W. Chapman '24 of Yale. T. C. Coxe '21 of Yale came in ten yards behind Chapman in second place, while Bayard Wharton '22 of the University was a close third. Richard Chute '22, who was greatly handicapped by a pulled tendon which he received in practice Thursday, came in fourth. Chapman's time for the distance was 50 seconds, only 1-5 of a second slower than the best time which has been made by Beril Rudd, the Oxford captain, this spring.
The results of this race settled the entries for the English meet, with the exception of the mile event. Original plans were to enter Captain D. F. O'Connell Jr. '21 and Thomas Campbell of Yale in this event, but the Yale authorities have stated that they would rather not have Campbell run the long distance. Plans were then made to enter J. W. Burke Unc. of the University, but the decision of the Athletic Committee that the English meet should be considered part of the spring season makes it unlikely that Burke's entry will be allowed.
Intensive training for the meet for both the University and Yale teams will begin sometime after July 4.
