The make-up of the University-Yale team for the track meet with Oxford and Cambridge, which is to be held in the Stadium July 23, has been decided by agreement in every event except the quarter-mile. Who the entries in this event are to be will not be determined until Saturday, when trials will be held on the Soldiers Field track. In all other events the Crimson and Blue authorities found it possible to reach a decision in regard to the entries, based upon the season's record of the two teams.
Two men from each college will take part in the trials for the quarter on Saturday. Richard Chute '22 and Bayard Wharton '22 will be the Crimson representatives, and T. C. Coxe '21 and G. W. Chapman '24 will run for Yale. Wharton seems to have the edge over Chute, having beaten him in the Tech meet, the Yale meet, the Princeton meet, and in the Intercollegiates. Which of the two Yale runners is the better is hard to tell; both have done well in competition, and turned in better times than either of the University men. Coxe was unable to run in the Harvard-Yale meet, being disabled with a pulled tendon. In the Princeton meet, however, he ran a close second to Stevenson, the Tiger quarter-miler, in the fast time of 48 4-5 seconds. Chapman is a former Exeter runner who has been running for the Yale freshmen this spring. His best performance in a meet was against the Tiger yearlings, when he won his race in 50 3-5 seconds.
American Entries Given
The entries which have been agreed upon by Coach Bingham for the University and Coach Mack for Yale are as follows: 100-yard dash, E. O. Gourdin '21, Harvard; Samuel Feldman '23, Yale; 880-yard run, Thomas Campbell '21, Yale, E. W. Siemans '21, Yale; one-mile run, Thomas Campbell '23, Yale, Captain D. F. O'Connell Jr. '21, Harvard; two-mile run, M. K. Douglas '24, Yale, F. W. Hilles '22, Yale; 120-yard high-hurdles, C. G. Krogness '21, Harvard, Anton Hulman '24, Yale; shot-put, J. R. Tolbert '22, Harvard, R. E. Jordan '23, Yale; hammerthrow, J. F. Brown '22, Harvard, P. E. Cruickshank '23, Yale; high-jump, R. W. Landon 21, Yale, C. G. Krogness '21, Harvard; broad-jump, E. O. Gourdin '21, Harvard, C. G. Krogness '21, Harvard.
It is likely that some changes may be made in this list before the meet. There is a possibility that J. W. Burke Unc. may be allowed to run for the University if his marks in his examinations are such to allow him to become a regular student next year. He transferred last fall from Notre Dame, where he made a name for himself as a miler, and this winter he has been running for the B. A. A. He has been training this spring under Jack Ryder, the B. A. A. coach, and has been making good time in trials. If he is able to run it is probable that Campbell will run only in the half-mile, and then Burke and O'Connell will be the American runners in the mile.
Although no reply has yet been received to the cablegram sent to the English team a short while ago, it is probable that they will consent to the suggestion proposed by the University authorities. The team representing the University and Yale was chosen on the supposition that second places would count in case of a tie, and for this reason the best men in each event were picked, regardless of which college they attended.
