That the University's representation in the relay events at the Penn Carnival April 29 and 30 will consist of teams in the short medley and one-mile relay races was definitely announced by Coach Bingham yesterday. The medley race will be made up of the two 220-yard legs, a quarter-mile and a half, and will be run on Friday, April 29, while the mile relay, with four 440 divisions, will take place on Saturday, April 30.
The runners for the 220 stretches in the medley will probably be chosen from among E. O. Gourdin '21, C. B. S. Evans '22 and R. D. Howard '23, all outstanding sprinters on the University squad, Gourdin being the present national junior 100-yard champion. Coach Bingham will undoubtedly use Captain D. F. O'Connell '21 for the half-mile anchor portion of the relay, although J. A. McCarthy '22 or H. G. Davis '21 may be pressed into service for this event. Richard Chute '22, Bayard Wharton '22, E. T. Doherty '22, A. H. Gordon '23 and J. W. Quinn '23 make up the wealth of material from which Coach Bingham will be able to choose for the 440 stretch. From these same five men will be selected the University representatives in the mile relay the next day; and it may be necessary to double up on one or two of them.
Should Place in Pole-Vault
R. W. Harwood ocC., the University's star pole-vaulter, will compete in this event at the Carnival, and is expected to place, while Gourdin will take part in the broad jump as well as in the medley relay. R. S. Whitney '22 and R. W. Fitts '23 in the high hurdles, and J. M. Tolbert '22 and J. F. Brown '22 in the shot-put will round out the University delegation.
W. A. Baron '14, captain and star quarter-miler of the University team in that year, and now a member of the Track Advisory Committee, will accompany the Crimson runners both on the spring trip to Pennsylvania State College April 16-19, and on the trip to Philadelphia for the Carnival. He will go in no official capacity other than that of a member of the Track Committee, but will aid Coaches Bingham and Farrell in their work.
The University and Freshman track men went through their usual practice yesterday afternoon Candidates for all the running events tried starts, and afterwards ran their respective conditioning distances. H. B. Lawless '18, captain of the University cross-country team in that year and F. B. Withington '15, a former weight star on the track team and also an "H" football man, assisted at the practice.
