Although actual work does not start until Thursday night, all the Freshmen who intend to enter the ten weeks' competition for the news end of the CRIMSON are expected to report at the meeting to be held tomorrow night in Standish Hall Common Room at 7 o'clock. Sophomores are also urged to attend this meeting, at which Mr. Frederick L. Allen '12, Secretary of the Corporation, will speak, for at this time the work of both the news and photographic ends will be outlined by the heads of the two departments.
This is the last chance that 1923 men will have to make the paper, except for the editorial competitions next year.
The work required of news candidates is hard but interesting; and it is broadening, for through the gathering of news the candidate gets to know the College thoroughly and becomes acquainted with the leaders of all the undergraduate organizations. In securing interviews and special interviews, candidates will have an opportunity to meet prominent men connected with the University, visiting speakers, and other eminent men whose opinions may be of interest to the University.
In the later part of the competition candidates will be given a chance to learn the mechanical work of the paper, serving as make-up men in the press room.
At the end of their Sophomore year, all the men compete for the position of assistant managing editor, three of whom are chosen. These men compete the following fall for managing editor and at the mid-year elections one of the three is chosen. Then comes another competition for assistant managing editorships and elections are again held at the end of the year. The managing editor, after one term in that office, automatically becomes president. Assistants who fail to win their competition are also eligible for the position of editorial chairman.
The photographic work consists principally in securing pictures for both the supplement and daily editions, and dark room work. Men from the class of 1924 alone are eligible for this contest and candidates for the Red Book will easily be able to combine CRIMSON work with that of the year book.
