WORCESTER TRACK MEN WIN, 48-29

The Worcester Academy team, showing unexpected strength in the 600, mile, and relay races, defeated the Freshmen Saturday afternoon by the score of 48-29. With the exception of these events, the teams were very evenly matched. The 1924 team was woefully lacking in first place winners, and Worcester succeeded in scraping up all but two of the firsts. Captain Percy Jenkins lived up to expectations by being high scorer for the Freshmen, gathering in a total of eight points. T. Durant and G. M. Campbell shared the honor of highest point-winner for the schoolboys, each getting a first and a third.

Captain D. W. Comins of the Worcester team surprised everyone by taking first in the 40-yard dash, beating Jenkins by a scant margin. He later on ran lead-off man in the relay against J. E. Merrill, and outran him completely, handing over a quarter-lap lead to the next man.

The 300-yard dash was the closest race of the afternoon. J. E. Merrill of the Freshmen got the jump at the start and led the field a fast pace, until on the last corner T. Durant of the schoolboys took the inside by a bit of clever running and beat Merrill to the tape by a scant few inches. The 600-yard run was marred by a couple of falls at the beginning of the second lap, when W. Tibbetts, of Worcester, leading, with Thomas Campbell of the 1924 team a few feet behind, tripped on the corner, but got up just in time to spill Campbell, who was forced to hurdle him, landing in the mud at the side of the track. Campbell picked himself up and ran on, but was unable to make up the distance he had lost, and did not place.

Neither the 1000-yard run or the mile was decided until the last lap. In the 1000, C. Harris, the only Worcester entry, led most of the way with J. C. White a few yards behind, and D. A. Wallace apparently outdistanced. A couple of laps from the end, however, Wallace began to pick up, and passed first White and then Harris, and in the last lap White also passed Harris and came in second. In the mile, Campbell Newhall '24 led for the first half of the race, with D. Coughlin on his heels all the way. At about the midway point Coughlin took the lead, but stayed just ahead of Newhall until the last lap, when he lengthened out his stride and finished several yards ahead.

The relay race was Worcester's all the way. Comins tore away from Merrill and handed over a good lead to F. Wetherbee, who increased it, leaving Jutte nearly half a lap behind. C. S. VanRennselaer, running third for the Freshmen, held his own against D. Mason, and Captain Jenkins, the anchor man, succeeded in gaining some, but was far behind at the finish.

600-Yard Run.--Won by C. E. Hammond, W.; second, W. Tibbetts, W.; third, A. Varney, W. Time, 1 minute, 25 seconds.

1000-Yard Run.--Won by D. A. Wallace, H.; second, J. C. White, H.; third, C. Harris, W. Time, 2 minutes, 33 3-5 seconds.

One-Mile Run.--Won by D. Coughlin, W.; second, C. Newhall, H.; third, P. G. Gossler, H. Time, 4 minutes, 36 seconds.

Relay Race (two laps per man).--Won by Worcester (D. W. Comins, F. Wetherbee, D. Mason, T. Durant); second, Harvard (J. E. Merrill, Jutte, C. S. VanRennselaer, P. Jenkins). Time, 2 minutes, 3 seconds.

High-Jump.--Won by G. M. Campbell, W.; 5 feet 3 inches; second, tie between E. Strickler, W., and M. Morse, H., 5 feet, 2 inches.

Shot-Put.--Won by P. Jenkins, H., 40 feet, 8 inches; second, R. Grover, W., 39 feet; third, P. A. Byron, H., 37 feet, 9 inches.
