HAVERFORD SOCCER TEAM DEFEATED BY CRIMSON ELEVEN, 4-1

In a hard and well-fought contest, the Crimson soccer team triumphed over the strong Haverford eleven on Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon by the score of 4 to 1. This victory carries the University up to fourth place in the Intercollegiate League. The Quaker team took the lead in the very beginning of the game, but the University tied the score on a penalty, and in the second half broke down their opponent's defense, chalking up three goals in the last 12 minutes of play. With the exception of John Pallo '23, who sprained his ankle in Wednesday's game, the team lined up exactly as it did against M. I. T.

At the start of the game, Haverford launched a powerful attack and Hunsicker breasted the ball through the Crimson defense, scoring in the first three minutes of play. Almost at once the University took the ball back into the opponent's territory and R. W. Heizer '23 evened the score on a penalty. During the rest of the half the ball stayed in the middle of the field, the period ending with a 1 to 1 score.

The second half was closely contested, no further scoring being made until the last 12 minutes of play. Then the victors caught their stride and shattered the Haverford defense. Corliss Lamont '24 took the ball down the field, and passed to A. J. Byington '24, who scored perfectly. About three minutes later Byington broke away entirely and made a goal unaided. About two minutes after that, Byington again made a dash down a clear field and once more scored by himself. Haverford was unable to come back with a powerful offense and the game closed with the score 4 to 1.

Byington's game all the way through was even better than his three tallies show. Heizer, Lamont, and A. K. Murray '23 played in good form and showed up well in combination work. Although Haverford showed better team work they were outfought by the Crimson, and in the second period their defense gave way.

The victory, coming at the close of the season, clinches the University's fourth place in the Intercollegiate League. Until the Yale game, Coach Burgess's men placed last in the league and the 3 to 0 victory over the Elis on Friday brought them up to fifth.
