ENTIRELY AS INDIVIDUALS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Under the communication heading there is printed a letter objecting to the fact that the "University as such" is not remaining neutral in regard to the railroad strike which is now threatening. It is unfortunate that such a misunderstanding has arisen, and in view of the possibility that more than one person is in doubt on the point, it may be appropriate to say a few words.

The undergraduate committee in charge of enrolling, men for emergency service is entirely unofficial as far as either University or Student Council make it official. It is composed of a group who, reeling that the undergraduate body wants to assert its right as citizens to serve if the strike were called, decided to put the necessary machinery for accomplishing this purpose at the disposal of the students. It is no more an official movement of Harvard University than if a group of business men in Boston under took to organize a means to help out in any serious public situation. Any member of the University who "entertains this opinion and wishes to aid in breaking the strike" does so entirely as an individual.
