The University put the finishing touches to the Yale series when it defeated the Elis at Fenway Park, '63, on Saturday, June 26. Thanks to the sterling pitching of Felton the University was able to recover after five rather disastrous innings and to come back, scoring five runs in the sixth inning. Over 1,0,000 spectators attended the game.
Yale made its first run almost before the University had started to play. Felton passed Murphy, the first man up. Then, after Sawyer had fouled to Blair, Aldrich reached first when Jones fumbled his grounder. Then Murphy, before either Felton or Blair knew that he had started, had reached third. Finally Felton pitched wild, allowing Murphy to reach home with the first run. Then Felton tightened up and retired the Elis.
In spite of hits by Conlon and Jones, hard luck spoiled the Crimson's chances in their time at bat. And in the second inning Yale kept on going. After Diamond had struck out. Parsons made a hit to left and Peters sent a sale one between Emmons and Jones on which Parsons went to third. The double steal was worked and Parsons slipped into home with the second run.
Fusilade of Hits Retires Coxe
Neither the University or Yale could do anything for the next three innings. But in the sixth Coxe left the ground and gave Conlon a base on balls. Then Perkins hit a hard grounder which hit on the field and bounded high over Holmes head. Emmons sacrificed, advancing both runners. Conlon came home and Perkins went to third when Jones reached the keystone bag on the attempt to catch Conlon at the plate. Then Janin, a recruit from the second team, lined out a double on which Perkins and Jones scored. After Hallock had flied to Parsons. Lincoln and Blair made singles, and two more runs were chalked up.
That inning won the game for the University. Felton continued to pitch effectively and was given good support. Yale's third score was made when Murphy came home as Felton was playing for two runners at first in the eighth inning.
