To the Editors of the CRIMSON:--

Mr. Porter, chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, is endeavoring to prevent action on the resolutions before the committee which propose recognition of the Irish Republic, and sending an American representative to its government. When he asked the opinion of Secretary Colby on the resolutions, the latter replied, "It seems hardly proper for me to attempt to guide the action of your committee by an expression of opinion of legislation which is at this stage." Thus Secretary Colby has thrown away an opportunity to do his country a great service.

The meddling of our congressmen in Great Britain's affairs only strains the good relations of the two countries. And it is not a commendable love of the ideal of liberty which prompts this action, but a contemptible fear of the Irish vote in America. If these congressmen had enough courage to hold their country's interests above their own, they would keep their mouths shut on this matter.

Secretary Colby deserves to be condemned for pusillanimously refusing to use his influence to squelch these proceedings, which are a disgrace to the American people. DAVID HALL '22.
