One-Sided Contest at New Haven is Won by Eli Yearlings

Seven to two was the score of the Freshman contest at New Haven Saturday, which the Yale netmen won easily. One singles and a doubles match formed the University's total score. The best match of the afternoon, a surprise, was furnished by W. Hawkes, brother of the University star, and Captain M. Duane of the Crimson team, the Eli winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The second match, between G. M. Wheeler of Yale and J. D. Farnham, runner-up, was one of the longest and closest and fastest of the day.

Singles -- Hawkes (Yale) defeated Duane (Harvard), 6-2, 6-1; Wheeler (Yale) defeated Farnham (Harvard), 6-2, 3-6, 6-4; Guild (Harvard) defeated Vaughan (Yale), 6-3, 6-3; Weidlich (Yale) defeated Frost (Harvard), 6-3, 6-4; Houk (Yale) defeated Grabau (Harvard), 6-1, 6-0; Peck (Yale) defeated Warburg (Harvard), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

Doubles--Hawkes and Wheeler (Yale) defeated Duane and Frost (Harvard), 4-6, 6-1, 6-1; Weidlich and Peck (Yale) defeated Guild and Farnham (Harvard), 3-6, 7-5, 6-4; Grabau and Hoskins (Harvard) defeated Vaughan and Ruckgaber (Yale), 6-3, 6-3.
