FIRST EIGHT TRAILS 'B' BY OVER A LENGTH

THIRD CREW LEADS 1923

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In spite of the recent shake up in the University crews, Crew B maintained its superiority on Saturday by winning a race of a mile and seven-eighths by a little over a length from the first crew. The Union Boat Club crew, which was the third participant in the contest, came in last about four lengths behind the first University eight. The time was 11 minutes, 42 seconds, which is good time for the day, when there was a stiff breeze blowing against the crews, and the water was choppy.

For the first quarter of a mile, the shells were fairly even, the second having a slight lead. At that point R. Jenney '21 put the stroke of crew B a little higher, and took a lead of half a length over A, while the Unions dropped two lengths behind. As the crews passed under the Massachusetts Avenue bridge--the mile mark--the second crew had a lead of over a length on the University eight, while the Unions still trailed, nearly three lengths in the rear. Although the first boat came up a little in the last stretch, they were just behind the stern of the second shell when they crossed the finish line; the Union Boat Club crew came in four lengths behind the University. After the first half mile, the crews rowed at about twenty-six.

Third Eight Winner Over 1923.

The third University eight and the first 1923 crew had a race over the same course, the third crew winning by the narrow margin of five feet. The yearling eight held the lead until the last half mile, when the two shells changed position frequently, the third crew finally putting itself over the line by a hard sprint at the finish that gave it a five foot lead.

These races place the second University crew at the head of the ladder tournament, with the first crew second. The positions of the third University and first Freshman eights is unchanged, being third and fourth, respectively.
