Although the rain hindered the beginning of the track season to some extent, 150 men reported to Dr. Whelan and Coaches Donovan and Farrell yesterday afternoon on Soldiers Field. In a short talk to all candidates in the track room, Dr. Whelan emphasized in the following points: "Track practice will be held every day regardless of the weather. Expert runners will come here from the B. A. A. and the N. Y. A. C. during the season to coach the men for a day.
"I am disappointed at the small squad out this afternoon, but with pleasant weather or not tomorrow I expect many new men to report here at the field. We must have double the number of men out in order to develop a winning team."
At today's practice men will be divided into groups and placed under the charge of the group captains. Dr. Whelan announced this week's list of captains as follows: two-mile run, B. Lewis '20; one-mile run, D. F. O'Connell '21; 880-yard run, J. A. McCarthy '22; 440-yard run, B. Wharton '22; 220-yard dash, P. C. Pearson '21; 100-yard dash, E. O. Gourdin '21; high and low hurdles, F. C. Church '20; shot-put, C. A. Clark, Jr., Occ.; hammer-throw, J. F. Brown '22; high jump, C. G. Krogness, Jr., '21; pole-vault, R. W. Harwood '20; broad jump, C. G. Krogness, Jr., '21 and E. O. Gourdin '21, alternately.
