FRESHMEN TIE UNIVERSITY NINE

FIRST GAME OF SEASON ENDS IN 1-1 TIE AFTER SIX INNINGS

In the first informal baseball game for the University players, which was held at Soldiers Field yesterday, the University team was unable to gain more than a 1-1 tie in a six-inning contest with the first string 1023 players. The University team was made up of those men who did not go to Middlesex to practice. The pitching of R. P. Field '23 who struck out five men in two innings was the feature of the contest. The in fielding was rather ragged and teamwork was noticeable lacking, but the condition of the field and the early season accounts for this.

In the third inning the scoring started when L. P Jones '20 singled. After the next two men had grounded out, D. McK. Key '22 scored him with a long double, but was caught trying to stretch his hit to three bases.

The Freshmen tied the game in the fourth when C. C. Buell '23 hit for two bases to centre field and advanced to third on J. C. Bancroft's hit, after G. Owen '23 was put out on an infield fly. In the pinch S. J. G. Nowak made a smashing single past the pitcher's box scoring Buell with the tying run. W. Butterfield '20 tightened up, however, and prevented further scoring.

Today, Coach Slattery will give the University infielders their first outdoor workout on Soldiers Field.

In yesterday's game the two teams lined up as follows: Informals.--Johnson p.; Scott, c; Jones, 1B.; Kent, 2b.; Sherman, 3b.; Key, s.s.; E. H. Stillman, 1f.; McCouch, cf.; Lee, rf. Freshmen.--Anastas, p.; Butman, c.; Bancroft, 1b.; Nowak, 2b.; Buell, 3b.; Worthington. s.s.; Owen, 1f.; Garland, c.f;.; Kerr, rf.
