Basketball made its first formal bid for official recognition last night when Paul Jackson '21, who has been the undergraduate manager of class basket ball this year, presented a petition to the Athletic Committee requesting that basketball be made a recognized 'minor sport next year. The petition will be acted upon at the next meeting of the Athletic Committee. It was signed by the four captains and managers of the class teams.
The petition comes as the natural sequence of the Freshman basketball team organized as an experiment by the Department of Physical Education this winter. The interest not only in the Freshman basketball, but also in the interclass series has been so great that the management feels justified in asking that basketball be a University sport next year and that a modest schedule be arranged for it.
Mr. Geer, Director of Physical Education, who has been actively encouraging basketball, during the entire year, has declared himself in favor of action in accordance with this petition.
