A penitentiary sentence for a United States senator will do much to make the people realize that America is a Democracy and not a Plutocracy. Senator Newberry has probably found that all of the people cannot be fooled all of the time, and that even a millionaire senator is subject to the equality of the law. Statutes, even if possibly unduly restrictive, must be respected, and those who intentionally conspire to violate such statutes must suffer the penalty.
By the conviction of Senator Newberry, Henry Ford achieves a second vindication. The wisdom of Mr. Ford's decision to leave the election to the people of Michigan rather than to entrust his fortunes to the power of wealth, has been amply demonstrated. Senator Newberry's supporters have sometimes felt that the end justified the means. We feel sure that they have changed their minds.
