DRIVE FOR GIFT TO FRANCE OPENS TODAY

The drive for subscriptions to "America's Gift to France" will be inaugurated in the University today. This gift will take the form of a colossal statue which will show the spirit of Liberty as a woman struggling with undaunted courage against her enemies. Around the central figure will be grouped others representing the defensive strength afforded by the Allies of France. Models for this statue are now being designed by Frederick MacMonnies, the distinguished sculptor who, during the war, transformed his studio into a hospital for wounded French soldiers.

This memorial gift from America has already received the highest official sanction of the French government and will be placed in a position overlooking the Marne near the vilage of Meaux where the first German advance was stopped less than 20 miles from Paris on September 6, 1914.

Cercle Francais in Charge Here

In the University the Cercle Francais, of which Y. H. Buhler is president, will direct the collection of contributions toward the $250,000 fund to be raised during the first five days of this week. The name of this University will appear in the Memorial Book as one of the organizations making the gift possible.

Canvassers have been chosen to cover practically all of the University dormitories and boxes will be placed in the CRIMSON Building, the Union, and Phillips Brooks House for the convenience of those not solicited. The first meeting of the committee will be held in the Cercle Francais room, Grays 17, tomorrow evening at 9 o'clock when reports for the first two days will be made.
