2 RUNS IN NINTH GAVE CONTEST TO MAINE 9-8

TEAM LEAVES FOR PENN.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

By a ninth inning rally which netted two runs, the Maine team defeated the University nine 9-8 in yesterday's contest at Soldiers Field. The University team threatened to tie the score in the fast session when K. W. Perkins '20 hit safely, stole second, and reached third on a fielder's choice, but neither of the next two University batters were able to bring him in. E. S. Hardell '21, H. M. Erb '20 and E. K. Bullard '20, who pitched for the University, were ineffective against the visiting batsmen who obtained a total of 11 safeties. The University batters hit Johnson of Maine for an equal number of hits, including a double and a home run by A. Blair '21. Both nines fielded loosely, and four misplays were marked against each team.

Six of the University runs were scored in the second inning. After Johnson had walked Perkins and hit McLeod, singles by Frothingham and Knowles brought these two men across the plate. Johnson then gave one more pass, which filled the bases, and another base on balls forced in Frothingham. Three more runs were scored when Waterman, the Maine first baseman muffed a wild throw from third base.

For the University, R. W. Emmons '20 played a steady game at shortstop, and R. E. Gross '19 made two brilliant catches in the outfield. Blair, Knowles, Frothingham and Perkins led the University batters with two hits each.

Fourteen members of the first squad will leave for Philadelphia at 1 o'clock today. The team will meet the University of Pennsylvania nine at Franklin Field tomorrow afternoon in the seventh game of the season.
