POSITIONS OPEN FOR SUMMER WORK IN SHIPPING INDUSTRY

A committee of the National Marine League has just been organized to place college undergraduates in temporary positions during their summer vacations, with concerns engaged in some maritime enterprise. The purpose of this is to arouse the interest of undergraduates in the shipping industry and foreign trade, so that a supply of trained and educated men will soon be furnished to meet the extensive needs of our new merchant marine.

The positions are definitely offered and are with responsible companies in various parts of the country; salaries will be fair in all cases. In this way, the student will gain a clear perspective of the branch of the industry he chooses as well as receiving valuable practical experience. Preference will be given to applicants who are finishing their Freshman or Sophomore year, as it is hoped the men will continue their work in subsequent vacations and will thus receive a more complete training.

The following considerations are made in the case of each applicant: whether he is taking technical or classical courses, and in what department he is concentrating; between what dates he may be able to work; in what city or section of the country he prefers to be located; what business preference he has, if any; and the quality of a required certificate of character. Those able to produce a statement from some of their instructors that they have given indications of qualities of leadership or initiative will receive especial consideration.

The Marine League is following in the organization of this committee a plan adopted by both England and Germany for the advancement of their merchant marine. In anticipation of the inevitable economic conflict to come and the increase in foreign trade of the United States, our own merchant marine is being provided for in this manner.
