MANY CURRICULUM CHANGES

With the recent announcement of the courses of instruction offered next year by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, a considerable number of changes are to be noted. Many of these are due to the return of the University to its pre-war schedule of two terms, which necessitates alteration in the arrangement of the courses. Other changes have been brought about by new conditions and by the addition of new instructors.

Several courses have been added in the department of Classical Philology, under Group 1. These are courses 23, 27hf, 33hf, 37hf, 47hf, 70hf, 32hf, 34hf, 74hf, and 75hf. On the other hand, courses 42hf, 60hf, 39hf, 36, 50hf, and 57 have been withdrawn. The new directors of the department for 1919-20 are Professors A. A. Howard and Gulick. In the English Department, Mr. Maynedier is in charge of course 22, which has been limited to sixty students. English A is in charge of Mr. Hersey for the first half-year and of Professor Greenough for the second. A new course is number 10c, on Masterpieces of Public Address, to be given as a half-course in the second half-year by Associate Professor Winter. Professor Lowes is listed to give English 9, which has been changed to Examination Group IV. Another new course is 7a, given by Professor Hurlbut, on "Swirt and his Time." Professor Lowes is also scheduled to give two other new courses in this department, number 72 and Comp. Lit. 7. Mr. Stone is not listed to give his usual courses next year. Under the German department, Associate Professor Bierwirth takes the place of Dr. Lieder in German A, who replaces Professor von Jagemann in 1a. As Professor H. S. White is not returning, Assistant Professor W. G. Howard will give course 25, and Professor Walz will give Comp. Lit. 8hf. Three courses in this department are to be omitted,--28hf, 29, and 32hf. In French a new course has been added under the title of French B. It is an elementary course, counting as two full courses, and equivalent to A and 1. This comes five times a week, and will be given by Assistant Professor Hawkins and Dr. Herrick. Together with Professor Allard, Assistant Professor Morize is to conduct another new course, number 8, and is to add still another alone number 24, on the Methods and Practices in the History of Literature which will be conducted entirely in French. A further change is the transference of course 16 to the first half-year at the same time making it a half-course. One addition is recorded in the Celtic Department,--course 1hf on Old Irish, by Professor Robinson. Comp. Lit. 8hf. will be given by Professor Walz in the absence of Professor White. Fine Arts 5n hf, formerly conducted by Professor Edgell, has been changed to the History of French Painting, to be given by Assistant Professor Sacs, while Courses 7a, 7b. and 9c, are withdrawn. In the department of Music, Professor Davison's place will be taken by Associate Professor Spalding in Course 2a, who, together with Mr. Ballantine, will offer a new course, on Beethoven. Number 6a is another new one, on the Evolution of Orchestral Style which will be given by Assistant Professor E. B. Hill.

New Science Courses Offered.

A large number of changes have also taken place in Group 2. In the Physics Department, Professor Palmer of Haverford College is no longer instructing. Courses 2, 3, and 5 have been withdrawn, and in their places are offered courses 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 12b hf, 6a, 8a, and 8b. Several changes have been necessitated by the death of Professor Sabine, and his subject of specialization, light, will be taught by Professor Lyman and Professor Chaffee. Two new courses, 10 and 11, are added by Professor Bridgman. Another new course is 21hf on Biological Physics, by Professor Duane and Dr. Bovie. Professor N. H. Davis is to give 6a. An innovation in the Department of Engineering Sciences is the listing of course 4, Plane, Topographical, and Railroad Surveying, which will be given at Squam Lake, N. H., under Professor Hughes. It begins the Saturday following Commencement, 1920, and will last eight weeks. In place of courses 5a hf, 6a hf, and 6b hf, which have been withdrawn, course 5 under Professor Johnson, Professor Huntington, and Assistant Professor Norton, and course 6, under Associate Professor Kennedy and Mr. Ninde, have been substituted. In 7a, Assistant Professor N. H. Davis takes the place of Mr. Ninde who will not be one of those on the staff of 8 next year. Professor Thorogood alone will give course rb hf,. The Astronomy Department has added two new courses, B and C, and has chained of 5 from Practical Astronomy to Field Astronomy. A change has been made in the Chemistry Department by withdrawing course 1, and substituting courses 2hf, 22hf, 17hf, and 20, all of which will be given by Professor Conant. Assistant Professor Grinnell Jones is listed to give courses 11 and 19. Assistant Professor Lamb will give 7hf and 13hf instead of Assistant Professor Forbes. Two other courses to be omitted are 21 and 20d. There are no changes in the Departments of Botany and Zoology. Palaentology 1 and 2 will be withdrawn and instead will be offered 1hf and 2hf. A new course under Hygiene and Sanitation has been added,--4hf, on Vital Statistics, by Professor Whipple and Mr. Fair. In the Geology Department a course on Mining Geology under Professor H. L. Smyth has been announced and in the Geography Department Eng. Sci. 4a hf on Surveying, Mapping, and Map-reading has been added. In this last department also, course 19hf has been substituted for course 2. Aerography is the new title for Meterology 20a. Mineralogy B and C have been combined into 2 and Petrography A and B are now respectively 1 and 2.

Few Changes in Group 3.

There are comparatively few changes under Group 3, the greatest number being in the History Department. Courses 26, 20a, 30bhf, 42, 34, 24c hf, 39hf, 20f, 43f, and 10hf have been withdrawn. Three new courses have been added,--A the History of Liberty, to be given by members of the department; 19, The Eastern Question, by Professor Coolidge; and number 17a. Course 16 has been made a full course and A8 has been substituted for 2hf. Instead of 2c and 2b, 2a and 2a hf are now offered. There is one new course in Economics,--17, on Vocational Education, to be given by Mr. Roy W. Kelly. Courses 17, 18a, and 18b are withdrawn, and 9hf will be given by Mr. George A. Mirick. Assistant Professor Tozzer has been added to help Dr. Hooton in Anthropology 1.
