WITHDRAW U.S. TROOPS FROM HUSSIA-PROF. FRANKFURTER

"Let Russia work out her own destiny," said Professor Felix Frankfurter '06, head of the Citizen's Committee recently organized in Boston to support the withdrawal of all American troops from Russia, in an interview yesterday. "England and France have withdrawn their soldiers from Russia, leaving only a small force of Americans impotently struggling against all the Bolshevist hordes. We also should make peace with Russia," he continued.

"The position of our committee is that taken by General Ian Smuts, member of the British Peace Commission at Paris and Prime Minister of the South African Republic, in his farewell address to the British people; 'Leave Russia alone, remove the blockade, adopt a policy of Gallio-like impartiality to all factions.' This is exactly where we stand; we believe that the only part we should take in Russia's affairs is relief work, such as Mr. Hoover did in Belgium."

When asked whether he did not think it might be better to send enough troops to Russia to crush decisively the Bolshevist forces, Dr. Frankfurter emphatically replied: "Crush the Bolshevists? It is impossible. And further, it is the very presence of our soldiers in Russia which gives the Bolshevists their power. The plea that they are fighting against a foreign invader serves to gain the sympathy of the people."

Finally when he was asked if he advocated this policy of non-interference for the sake of the American soldiers in Russia or for the sake of the Russians, Professor Frankfurter answered: "For the sake of the Russian people. The only way that they can win their way back to a sane and normal condition is by being freed from the influence of all external forces."

Mass Meeting in Faneull Hall.

Professor Frankfurter will preside at a mass meeting in Faneull Hall tomorrow evening at 8 o'clock to consider the question, "Make Peace with Russia." Other speakers will be Wilfred Humphries, who has recently returned after a year in Russia and Siberia with the Red Cross and Committee on Public Information; Professor Samuel E. Morrison '08, who was attached to the American Peace Commission; the Reverend Sydney B. Snow '00 of King's Chapel, and Colonel Raymond Robins.
