In its second game of the season, the University second team yesterday defeated the Brown seconds 14-13. The visitors' failure to kick a goal in the fourth quarter lost them an opportunity to tie the game, although they seemed able to gain on forward passes almost at will. The game was marred by many fumbles on both sides. The first half developed into a kicking duel, in which R. P. Parker '22 outpunted his rival by many yards, while Brown's passes were the outstanding feature of the second half.
The University scrubs made their first touchdown early in the game, when B. Lockwood '22 recovered a blocked kick and carried the ball over the line. In the second quarter Captain T. C. Wales '21 of the scrubs scored after a series of line rushes. Wales kicked both the goals. The most sensational play of the game was made by Oden of the Brown team, who got free in the fourth period for a run of 78 yards to a touchdown.
On the kick-off after Brown's second score Lockwood caught the ball and succeeded in making a 30-yard gain. G. S. Morse '22 and Parker starred in the backfield for the seconds, Parker's punts gaining almost invariably. The only serious injuries of the game were suffered by C. F. Peters '22, with a badly sprained ankle, and Morse, with a broken shouller. The summary: Score-- Harvard, 14; Brown 13. Touchdowns--Lockwood, Wales, Pieri, Oden. Goals--Wales 2, Green. Referee--J. B. Pendleton. Umpire--R. Beebe. Lineman--H. Butterfield. Time--10-minute quarters. The University second team is scheduled to play the following games this season: October 22: U. S. Submarine School, from New London, at Cambridge. October 31: Boston Harbor Forts Team, at Cambridge. At present an attempt is being made to arrange games with the Technology Sophomore team, and especially with the Yale seconds.
