CRIMSON COMPETITIONS.

The CRIMSON has issued a second call for candidates in the fall competitions for positions on the news, business and editorial staffs, competitions which are based upon conditions created by the war-time organization of the University. For the first time competitions are open to members of the Freshman class. Positions on the Board are, as usual, open to Juniors and Sophomores. For each department of the Board, moreover, there will be two competitions; one open to members of the S. A. T. C. and the Naval Unit; the other to students not enrolled in those organizations.

The CRIMSON believes that it is justified in continuing publication during the present year in a position entirely subordinate to all military activity. Since it is the duty of the University to maintain as much of its normal life as is compatible with the War Department's program, and since the publications form no insignificant portion of that life, they should be maintained wherever possible. Not only do they serve the student body but they also offer to many men opportunities in acquiring experience in journalism. The war cannot becloud the fact that its end will see Harvard and its student institutions continuing. There are therefore advantages, real advantages to be derived from the present competitions.

Candidates enrolled in the S. A. T. C. and the Naval Unit will find their work in no way incompatible with their military duties. Men who, because of their age or other cause cannot be in that organization will find the ordinary competition of a weekly publication before them. The CRIMSON calls out candidates believing that an appreciation of these facts will create a hearty response.
