WAR'S AFFECT MANIFEST AT TRACK CARNIVAL YESTERDAY

Proportion of Freshman Contestants Greater Than Ever Before.--Krogness Starred.

To what extent the war has affected University athletics was clearly shown yesterday afternoon in the first day of the annual mid-winter track carnival, the proportion of Freshman entries in the track games being larger than ever before. C. G. Krogness '21 was the individual star in the events yesterday.

The results of yesterday's events were as follows:

40-yard dash for Freshmen (scratch): Won by C. G. Krogness; E. O. Gourdin, second; J. M. B. Churchill, third.

40-yard handicap: Won by A. W. Douglass '21; F. F. Williams '20, second; B. Lewis '20, third.

45-yard hurdles for Freshmen (scratch): Won by C. G. Krogness; D. F. O'Connell, second; J. P. McAdams, third.

45-yard hurdles (handicap): Won by C. G. Krogness '21; D. F. O'Connell '21, second; F. C. Fishback '19, third.

Seven-lap race for Freshmen: Won by J. E. Nally; C. A. Page, second; H. Perrin, third. Time, 2.25.

20-lap race for Freshmen: Won by D. F. O'Connell; P. T. Cumner, second; F. L. A. Cady, third. Time, 7.50.

Shot-put (handicap): Won by J. F. Linder '19 (scratch), 43 ft. 4 1-2 in.; C. G. Krogness '21 (2-foot handicap), second, 42 ft. 5 in.; C. F. Batchelder '20 (1-foot handicap), third, 41 ft. 10 in.

High jump (handicap): Won by C. A. Page '21 (8 in. handicap), 5 ft. 10 in.; W. Goodell '21, second; C. G. Krogness '21, third.

35-pound weights (handicap): Won by A. Stevens '19, 38 ft. 7 in.; C. F. Batchelder '20, second, 35 ft. 5 in.; A. McElwain '21, third, 35 ft. 2 in.

The remaining events in the carnival will take place next Tuesday afternoon.
