Plans were announced yesterday for the partial reopening of the Union for use by all members of the University. A committee composed of F. E. Parker, Jr., '18, R. E. Gross '19, C. Canfield '19, W. W. McLeod '19 and A. Horween '20, in a conference with Regent Brandegee yesterday afternoon, made final provision for the opening of the wing on the side toward Quincy street. The Union furniture is now being moved in, and the entire west section will probably be ready for use by the early part of next week.
The action of reopening the Union was taken because there is at present no general place in the University where students may lounge and smoke. One important purpose is to furnish a common-room for the students who eat in the Union.
The rooms to be opened downstairs were used last year for reading and writing purposes. It is possible that the billiard and pool tables in the basement will also be installed on the first floor, in this way adding materially to the various facilities already promised.
On the second floor, the library will be reopened. This department of the Union has proved very popular in past years, since in proportion to the number of books, more students have used this library than Widener itself. In addition to files of current periodicals and of all publications connected with the University, the Union library furnishes many text books, reference, and reading books used in various courses, and a large collection of standard literature.
Since the Union has served as the University Dining Hall this year, the building is heated, and the extra rooms can be maintained without further fuel cost. The Union will be open to all students in the University this year without payment of membership fees.
