The Harvard branch of the Intercollegiate Intelligence Bureau has been requested to recruit at least two ambulance units from graduates and members of the University for immediate service abroad. These units will become part of the Medical Enlisted Men's Reserve Corps, and will be one of the first United States Army contingents to reach France. The ambulance units will also give substantial assistance to the French ambulance service, and will furthermore serve as Harvard units during the duration of the war. Some insignia designating the distinctive corps will be given to the members.
Enlistment in this contingent will be for the duration of the war. The units have been thrown open to members or graduates of the University who have slight physical disqualifications barring them from other service. Minor defects in sight and feet will probably be over-looked.
The American Ambulance Field Service, which has already recruited more than 100 men from the University for ambulance work in France, is co-operating with the Intercollegiate Intelligence Bureau in this new scheme to raise units of the Medical Enlisted Men's Reserve Corps. At present the American Corps is advising those from the University whose applications are on file and who have not signed up to go with the Harvard unit sailing on June 2, to join the University units being formed by the Intercollegiate Bureau.
The United States Government will pay all the expenses of the members of these corps, and will, in addition, give a salary.
Enrolment of the University units has been placed in charge of C. Dunham '10, and an enlistment office has been opened in Room 33, 40 State street, Boston, and another in University 2. The former will be open on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, from 9 to 12 o'clock; the latter on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, from 1 to 2 o'clock.
Position with the University units are open for mechanics, cooks, clerks, and orderlies, as well as for drivers. Non-commissioned officers will be selected from those finally accepted by the army recruiting officer who will be sent to formally enlist the contingent.
