A stiff workout was given the University baseball squad in the cage yesterday by Coach Duffy. The battery men warmed up for 15 minutes and then gave the fielders batting practice. Special emphasis was laid on bunting. Coach Duffy took the new candidates in hand, and endeavored to point out to them the fundamentals of this highly important side of batting.
Afterwards the nets were taken away, and the fielders were given practice in covering ground balls, and in throwing to first base and home. This fielding practice was not long, but the men show considerable improvement for the short time they have been out. Later the Freshmen took possession of the cage, the battery men warming up and pitching to the fielders. Practice in fielding was then given the men, special emphasis being laid on the throwing to bases. The Freshman squad now numbers 57 men, and on account of the congested conditions in the cage, a cut will probably be made soon.
