INTERCOLLEGIATE CONTESTS TO CEASE IF NATIONAL EMERGENCY SO DEMANDS

SIMILAR ACTION AT YALE

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

"The Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports has empowered the chairman to take action in regard to the discontinuance of intercollegiate games when service to the country makes such action desirable."

In this statement, made last night, the Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports has given to Dean Briggs the power of putting a stop to all intercollegiate contests in which the University is concerned whenever the military situation seems to require it. Similar action has recently been taken by Yale and Princeton. It was deemed advisable to centre the authority in the hands of one man, in order that nothing may delay decisive action if occasion arises.

While it is probable that the outbreak of war will put an immediate stop to all athletic schedules, it was intimated that the various sports will continue in an unofficial way. It was pointed out that although at the beginning of the present European struggle the English schools and universities suspended athletics of every sort, it has been found necessary to recommence sports to a certain extent.

In addition to making this decision the Committee voted on several other questions of minor importance. It was determined to take over the management of the Randolph tennis and racquet courts building, provided that a satisfactory plan for its management can be worked out.
